Arrêté du 24 mars 1982

Ventilation in France: the extract rates of the 1982 arrêté

The arrêté of 24 March 1982 on the ventilation of dwellings (amended 28 October 1983) sets how much air a French dwelling must extract. This page lists the rates and explains how Aira applies them to a floor plan.

What the arrêté requires

Ventilation is general and permanent. Air must be able to flow freely from the main rooms (pièces principales: living, dining, work rooms and bedrooms) to the service rooms (kitchens, bathrooms or shower rooms, and toilets). Every main room has an air inlet, and every service room an outlet. The rates depend on the number of main rooms, not on floor area.

Extract rates per service room (article 3)

Rates in m³/h, by the number of main rooms in the dwelling. With several toilets, each toilet counts as 15.

Reduced rates with adjustable control (article 4)

With individual controls the rates may be lower: a total of at least 35, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120 and 135 m³/h for 1 to 7 main rooms, and a kitchen rate of at least 20, 30 and 45 m³/h (45 from three main rooms up).

Worked example

A dwelling with four main rooms (a living room and three bedrooms). Article 3 gives an extract of 120 m³/h for the kitchen, 30 for the bathroom and 30 for a single toilet, 180 m³/h in total. With individual controls, article 4 allows a lower setting: a total of at least 90 m³/h, of which at least 45 m³/h in the kitchen.

How Aira applies it

Aira counts the main rooms on the plan (living, dining and work rooms and bedrooms) to choose the column of article 3, and uses the lowest totals the regulation allows: the reduced rates of article 4 for individual controls, with the kitchen at its minimum and the rest divided over bathroom and toilet in proportion to their article 3 rates. The total extract is divided over the main rooms by floor area for the supply, so supply and extract are in balance. A utility room gets no extract point, because article 2 names only kitchens, bathrooms or shower rooms and toilets. The nominal rates of article 3 are the capacity the installation must be able to deliver. You can adjust the figures in the table before you download the plan.
